There have been a lot of threads about dual exhaust, headers, etc. I switched from block huggers to full length ceramic this summer because the block huggers melted my motor mounts and I had to remove the headers to get at 2 spark plugs
When I was shopping for headers, fit was my #1 criterion. I wanted good clearance around the motor mounts, clutch linkage, starter, oil filter, spark plugs, and Steeroids u-joint chain.
I bought a pair of Dynomax BlackJack headers from Summit because they appeared to have a nice rearward sweep and stood out from the headers to clear the spark plugs.
I think I made a good choice - as the pictures below show. (Ignore the brake fluid all over the frame below the m.c. )
Clearance is OK too. If the headers hit, I've got bigger problems.

Just picked up a set of dynomax ceramic coated off ebay for my 79. Price was right and from what I've heard on the forum theyre supposed to be decent headers. Cant wait to get them in.
Something to consider as far as the plugs go is modifying a plug socket.
I took a shorty style plug socket, the kind with a hex end so you can turn it with a wrench (shorty wrench helps here too), and cut one of the six sides out with a cutting wheel. You don't even need to remove the whole side, just enough to be able to slide the socket sideways over the plug. That way, if the header goes in front of the plug, you can still get to it. The tool's a godsend and it's one of the few tools I would be really upset about if I lost.
I can replace all 8 plugs on my 72 (with headers) in about 15 min.
I have Hooker Super Comps on my 79 4 spd and they fit just fine, so there's another suggesiton to someone who might be looking. I just sent them off for ceramic coating the other week.

I've been shopping around too.
the Hookers seem pricey for normal headers.
How much is the ceramic coating going to run you?
I have a 75 that has also has a long tube header, believe it is a black jack (dynomax), the exhaust pipes, muffler are pretty crappy.....Question: is there an exhaust system (pipes, mufflers) available that will bolt up to these or do do all u guys have a exhaust shop custom make a system for your vette???? thnx for any info........

I started with a ready-made pipes and separately purchased mufflers. The fit was pretty bad - the pipes scraped on almost any little bump. The muffler shop I took it to said it would cost more to adjust the bends than to just bend custom pipes in the first place, so I just scrapped the kit pipes. Custom bent pipes are the way to go BUT make sure you go to a shop that bends pipes for Corvettes, muscle cars, and hot rods regularly. You don't want your car to be their experiment.
MN80Vette - was the part number of the Dynomax's WLK-86008? I'm guessing I'll get blasted for this question, but will they work with the AC bracket or will I need to fabricate something?

These r the ones i just picked up. U need to make a short spacer for the a/c, 3/8 tubing i think,

Yes, that's the part number, but I don't know about the AC bracket. I didn't install the AC compressor when I replaced my engine. Sounds like ESU can help you.

Let us know how your headers project goes!
Recently I posted my experience on installing Hedman Elite's on my 79. I bought the AC adapter that was recommended but it DID NOT work. After eye-balling the application over a couple of brewskies, I ended up just fabbing a spacer using a 1/2" OD x 1 3/8" steel pipe between the header and the AC bracket. Of course at this point I also reused the original #2 cylinder exhaust manifold bolt.

I havent installed mine yet, gonna wait to see if I sell the car first and save them for the next ride. That being said most people wind up fabbing some type of spacer as Mashrat did.

It's a little more than just headers. New suspension, differential, tranny, engine... the list goes on and on. But I'm getting to the point where I think I might actually hear it run again!
Any comments on the new exhaust system being offered by Pypes?
Good news!, thnx for the info.....
I notice their website says $599 available in April....with a $487 introductory price...also says "* some cutting may be required"........nice custom fit system!!!
Wonder if anybody has ordered??, my long tube header exhaust system is pretty crappy hangs real low, loud as hell at idle!!!!! (but just bought car and is in storage 2 hours away so only going on the memory), so it is tempting to have the X cross tube which should be better than straight duals......anybody thinking about getting this system????

Well, the web site says April, but their production group says "maybe June/July". I'm going to look for another option...
