And the vacuum canister can be moved from one switch to another?
Yes.
Here a pic that shows the old Corvette switch on the left and the shiny new Camaro switch on the right.
If I remember correctly, I just swapped the brass housing for the old gray one.
Be gentle, as the bakelite shell of the switch is easy to break.
I ended up swapping that too.

...Its pretty much the same without the vacuum actuator.
Vacuum sux anyway! How much would a chevy light switch from the wrecking yard cost? If the dash lights still didn't work, throw it in the bin or keep it aside for next year's Christmas giveaway...
I hope I am not to late to put my two cents in. I have a 78, when I purchased it, like you no dash lights. The problem was not the switch, but the bulbs and sockets. I purchased all new bulbs and cleaned each socket. All dash lights work now. On the 78 I had to lower the column to remove the dash.
I Am Not Sure About If An 80 Is The Same But I Have A 76 .i Got A New Switch From Corvette America Last Week For About$50. The Tach Issue Is Probably The Circuit Board . Not That Hard To Do And You Could Do The Switch At The Same Time. Mine Was'nt Working ,put A New Board In Without Any Filter And Works Fine.
