Sometimes a blown header gasket can sound like major engine problems also.I to would like to know how your oil pressure is.If you drain the oil put in one can of slick50 with your favorite brand of oil and see if that does anything.
I'm not arguing, but I've never heard of this before....
The oil pressure on my vette goes down at idle and up with rpm... and I have no rod bearing issues with it.
I also had a rod knocking on my truck and never noticed the oil pressure doing anything out of the ordinary as the oil pressure goes up and down on this depending on rpm too... even before the rod issue.
On my 99 Camaro same thing.... no rod bearing issues, but the oil pressure goes up and down with rpm.
Is the oil pressure changes somehow differnet than what you might see normally?
I should have said, At a hot idle if the oil pressure drops below 15lbs & builds up to 35lbs or better when you rev up the engine, thats a good indication of a bearing issue.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have pulled the spark plugs, no change in the knock/dinging. I have examined the fly wheel, and torque conv. bolts, no cracks or loose bolts. I have also examined the tension on the rods, made some slight adj. with no avail. I will keep looking. Thanks again

That was completely normal for these chevy engines back then. As long as the oil was regularily changed, they would easily last 100,000.
I can't remember 1 out of many that wasn't like that.
Unless you can isolate the area of the noise, it could be almost anything. If you are having a hard time isolating the noise, use a small length of garden hose with one end attached to the end of a funnel. Put the funnel to your ear and move the hose around the engine until you isolate your noise.....yes, it looks funny, but it works.
