You guys that have installed your egine with transmission installed.
What did you use for engine cradle so you could bolt up the trans?
I have my 350 assembled and want to be able to attach the TH400 before I install it. I don't want to do this from a hoist. Pictures would be great!
I do it from a hoist almost every time. If you want the motor stationary, and don't want to buy a small block engine cradle...which use the bell house bolts bu the way...just support the oil pan edges with blocks of wood.
Nothing wrong with doing it while it's attached to the hoist. It's actually easy because you can maneuver the engine into position that way.
yeah.. thought about wood blocks, but 2 or 3 4x4 blocks for pan clearance and then bolt the trans up and whatevere "movement" required to bolt the converter up.. just doesn't seem too stable to me.
But then again... I'm still trying to visualize Gary's transmission fixture.
I usually just put the transmission on a pair of milk crates stacked on each other. I then hoist the motor in front of the trans. I level the motor so it just lines right up, and start bolting. I do the bell housing all the way around, and do the torque converter bolts, dust cover, trans lines, and throttle linkages when the combo has been stabbed in. It works pretty well that way.
I have the bought stands from Summit. They work good the only thing I don't like are the small casters, so I welded on larger ones. They cost about $70. This is how I coupled the tranny to the engine.
What goes around comes around.... thats my philosophy.
For instance - I dont like cats.. at all. For a while, our neighbor had this white cat I'd see outside every day. Wake up in the morning, and there'd be paw prints on my ride (not the vette, dont worry... but just the same.). Anyway, I always thought to myself... man one day I'm going to poison that cat, or better yet, run it over real good. We moved about 6 months ago, and about a month ago, my sister calls me up. "hey Joe... what color was that cat you hated so much?" White I tell her, why? "Drive down the Hartford Turnpike!!!! its on the side of the road! FLATTENED!" After some jumps of joy, I proceed to hop in my car, take a ride the 2 miles down the street just to see for myself.. Sure enough... there it is. Stupid cat... I made sure both tires got him again, just out of principle.
Moral of the story: Everyone gets what they deserve at some point or another.
