Default drilling 1.6 pushrod slots

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...76&lastcat=537

Thought you guys would like this

"This tool was designed to simplify the modification needed when using 1.6 rocker arms on SB-Chevy heads. It allows you to use a hand drill with a 5/16'' bit to elongate the pushrod slot exactly in line with the existing slot, thus eliminating the need for guide plates."

Default good post

good post because a lot of people do not know that you must make the push rod slots longer in the heads when switching to 1.6 rockers because the push rod seat in the rocker is closer to the pivot point.

You should also open them up if you add guideplates.

if you add guide plates you should ream the hole to 7/16" dia. as you also need side to side clearance.

Do small blocks with guideplates already have the holes enlarged?

Why does the idea of grinding / drilling the cylinder head WHILE IT IS ON THE MOTOR not sound like a smart idea????

Where are the metal shavings going to go ??

If you're not careful the shavings could get to the valley drain holes, the intake ports, and even onto the valve stems. Cast iron drill shavings will be mostly of a dust type. FYI - I did open mine up to 9/16 with a drill, with the heads mounted and the intake manifold off.

I placed and wedged paper shop towels around the surrounding areas and over the valley. I drilled the holes over size one at a time, each time using the shop vac to suction up the shavings and replacing the shop towels as I went along.

Grinding the slots is a lot messyer(sp?). The grinding dust can travel several feet easily. The best bet there is totally cover everything and tape the edges down. Vacumn off the dust and wet wipe when done before removing the coverup material.

Why, they are going to travel all around the engine - a scrubbing and-a grinding, cleaning up all that nasty gunk for you....
