Default weird Q-Jet problem(Lars, anyone help??)

Today was a weird day. I woke up this morning not wanting to drive the vette to school because I don't have a sticker for it, and I just had a weird feeling. But I ended up driving it anyway, after it warmed up, I backed out of the driveway with no problem, put it into gear and started going, it didn't feel like the tranny was even engauged, but it was moving, I figured the tranny just needed to be warmed up some or something. Going down the road it was still doing it, shifting bad and so forth, but after about 5 minutes of driving it smoothed out and went the rest of the way flawlessly. Durring lunch I tried to go up to the bank but when I got to the stop light and put it in neutral(I don't like holding the break, its uncomfortable, so I put it in neutral), and suddenly my RPM's jump about 3000 RPM, I freak out and shut the car off. But Im at a stoplight with people behind me, I have no choice but to go. I get it to a gas station, and fiddle with it, nothing. Only thing that seemed odd was the secondaries where stuck open, and when I closed the butterfly things, there was no change in idle(I didn't expect there to be). I spend an hour trying to fix the problem, needless to say I didn't get to the bank, and I missed my math class  . At about 1:00, when my math class ends, I tried to start the car and it idled high again, so I shut it off, it desiled again(it did it ever since the stop light). After a second I started it back up and put it in gear, and the RPM's dropped so low the car almost stalled, so I took it out of gear, and the RPM's went back to normal, so I put it back in gear and it was perfectly. On the way home, the car shifted and ran smoother then it ever has. Was this "high idle" thing something the engine did to correct its problems(I don't think so, but thats what it seems like). The only adjustment I made was the idel screw, and once the RPM's dropped in gear, I had to put the idle screw back to where it was before, to keep the car running. So I know it fixed itself...but what happened???? Also, should I check something now to make sure it doesn't happen again?

My car was doing some weird mysterious things just like that. It would start and run fine, and then the idle would jump way up for a while, and then drop back down.
I checked under the hood each time, and could not figure it out.

After about the 4th day of this I found the problem. The wire to the electric choke was giving intermittent contact. When the wire was on, everything was fine. When if was loose, the choke would cool down and the motor would rev way up and stay there.

Give it a look, I hope that is what your problem is.......

Daniel -
I agree it sounds like you have an issue going with your choke and/or choke linkage. I'm a little concerned that your secondary airvalve was stuck wide open - it should never be open, and should close with its own spring pressure. You may have a problem with the choke pulloff diaphragm and the linkage rod running up to the secondary airvalve attach lever as well as with the secondary airvalve spring windup (although this latter issue will not cause an idle problem). So in addition to checking your electric choke to make sure it's hooked up and working, pull the little vacuum hose off your choke pulloff diaphragm and install a long one. Suck on it when the engine is cold and the choke is fully closed. Verify that the diaphragm is pulling all the way back and that it will hold a vacuum. Verify that the rod coming off the end of the diaphragm is correctly engaging with the choke linkage, and that this is pulling the choke open 1/4". Make sure this rod is not binding with anything, and that it has not fallen off. Open the throttle enough to get the throttle stop screw off the fast idle cam and verify that the fast idle cam and all the choke linkage is operating freely. If you have questions, drop me a note.

it almost seemed as if I had lost a spring on the secondaries. Over on the choke side of the carb, its pretty jumbled, with the vacuum lines and so forth, but when I looked at it, with the engine off, then I closed the secondaries, something moved up(I had no light, so I couldn't see detail), and when I let go of the secondaries this thing fell like it was because of gravity. Im know my discriptions are terrible, but it just seemed like something that needs a screw. Tomarrow I will dive into that side an trouble shoot like you guys suggested.

Hey! That could be what I'm looking at. The connector for the electric choke wire is really loose. Actually, half of it is missing. It doesn't seem to hold on very well.

Any idea where to find a new connector? :(
