hi, i have a 81' with a 79 distributor and carburetor in it..before i switched over the the 79 carb and distributor it ran horrible and now that i have switched when i am driving after i get up to 35mph the enging will not rev up and and the car will not pass 35mph. does anyone know what causes this?
the car revs up when in neutral to 4000+rpms, how ever when driving, it only reaches about 1200-1500 rpm. w/ top speed of about 35 mph. it was doing the same thing before the carb/dist. swap. It does have a catalyic convert. exhaust gas is coming out the tail pipes so I was thinking are ok. got a brand new fuel pump also.
Ahh, there is a clue, it was doing this before the swap.
couple things to verify;
#1 cat is not plugged up or mostly so
#2 Timing ring on ballances has not slipped
#3 proper indexing of the distributor
I would start with the timiong issues, then remove the cat and see what happens
Idling @ 700, I have the timing set at 6 degrees BTC with vacuum advance hose plugged, is this correct?
when we pull the vacuum hose off the dist. there is a definite change in engine rpm. thanks for the ideas, will double check the timing
it was doing the same thing before the carb/dist. swap.
This is one of the main reasons I encourage people not to dump the '81 CCC system the first time the car hiccups. If your car is not running correctly, diagnose the problem, don't just start replacing things. If it had the problem before, and you replaced the distributor and, I assume, made an educated attempt to set it up correctly, I doubt timing is the problem (two distributors, same timing issue: not likely). Get a GM service manual and start going through the diagnosis littany. God bless, Sensei
Is the computer still hooked up??? If so, unhook it!! 79 distrib. and carb won't work with it hooked up.......Also make sure your vac line is hooked up going back to the tranny........
we adjusted the timing to the correct setting and that seems to have fixed the problem. I agree with 1sensei we spent some unneccessary money. thanks for all the input.
