Default Block Casting Number - What Does It Tell Me?

Hello, I have a 1977 Vette....350. I see a set of number on the block close to the fire wall on the drivers side. Can anyone tell me what they mean?

Another important number is on the front of the motor. It's on a pad, the deck that the passenger head sits on, just forward of the head. That's the important block casting number.

I don't understand how to decipher these so I will a bit.

Matt, Or anybody....I can only find numbers on the drivers side back by the fire wall. I can't find any numbers on the block on the passenger side.

Help?

Here is a pic of the pad on my 400. The numbers were washed out by the flash but you can see the pad where they go.

The pad may be dirty, so try cleaning it or sanding it to get teh numbers to show through.

If you have no numbers the block may have been decked...where the upper surface has been milled off and the numbers are now gone.

14016379 is the block casting part number and was used for 79 and 80' 2 and 4 bolt main blocks (L-48 and L-82). Source: "Corvette by the Numbers". Is your engine the original?

Matt, Wish my motor was so clean...will be after the rebuild.

My 350 does not have a deck above the timing chain cover. I went back out and removed the chrome cover over the distributor. Found another number on there but hard to read and hard to reach for a cleaning.

I went to www.mortec.com and found info.

Casting Number
14016379
Size 350
Year 77-79
Main Cap Bot 2 or 4

Block Casting Date (this part makes me wonder)
G139
G = July (A-Jan, B-Feb, C-Mar etc)
13 = 13th day of the month
9 = Year of decade (1979)

Sounds like my motor was replaced....my car is a 77...but the casting date is 1979?????

Heh heh, the motor is clean because it's not in the Vette yet.

The pad isn't above the timing cover, but it is same height, just off to the passenger side of it. It's an extension of the deck that the passenger head sits on. Think of it like a porch on a house. The block is the ground and the head is the house.

Thanks Matt, I take another look....

I'm on the couch watching NASCAR now. I plan to pull the motor next weekend so it'll be much easier to find once I get it out.

Peace,

Doug
