Another important number is on the front of the motor. It's on a pad, the deck that the passenger head sits on, just forward of the head. That's the important block casting number.
I don't understand how to decipher these so I will a bit.
Hello, I have a 1977 Vette....350. I see a set of number on the block close to the fire wall on the drivers side. Can anyone tell me what they mean?
14016379
14016379 is the block casting part number and was used for 79 and 80' 2 and 4 bolt main blocks (L-48 and L-82). Source: "Corvette by the Numbers". Is your engine the original?
Matt, Wish my motor was so clean...will be after the rebuild.
My 350 does not have a deck above the timing chain cover. I went back out and removed the chrome cover over the distributor. Found another number on there but hard to read and hard to reach for a cleaning.

Heh heh, the motor is clean because it's not in the Vette yet.
The pad isn't above the timing cover, but it is same height, just off to the passenger side of it. It's an extension of the deck that the passenger head sits on. Think of it like a porch on a house. The block is the ground and the head is the house.
