Default valve covers

Can someone explane what the deal is with valve covers that do not have any holes in them. I want to run dart but many other company"s offer these covers also. what would you do with your pcv valve and how would you add oil? Do you have to cut your own holes and have fittings welded in?

they come with no holes for a reason, that way you can modify them to suit your application (breathers, spring oilers or a rocker box scavenging line or something) they are not designed w/ OEM stuff in mind but you can easily drill them for a PVC or a breather. Just remember that they also don't have oil baffles on the inside.

In addition to needing a decent size hole to pour oil in ... On a street motor ... you must vent the crankcase somehow ... either w/ a suck-thru PCV system ... or w/ vented cap(s). So, you gotta drill the covers for some PCV or vented cap(s) ... OR ... earlier motors & some aftermarket intakes have a provision where there's a standpipe tube about 1 1/4" dia that presses into the intake at front driver side and a vented cap plugs into top of standpipe ... you pop cap off to pour oil in & vented cap serves as a crankcase vent ... some aftermarket intakes have that hole plugged but are designed so that it can be knocked out & a standpipe pressed in. Note: it is more likely than not ... if you do run vented cap(s) in lieu of PCV system ... you will get some oil mist escape from cap(s).

I run power brakes off the intake, pvc valve off carb base. All i would need is a pvc fitting with oil baffle on the rear of one valve cover, and a breather cap (removable) on the front of the other side. Lota work to have to do to 170$ valve covers! These M/T are looking pretty good, now if only they clear. thanks guys

Consider putting the holes in the rear of the covers for a clean look
To add oil I pull a cover...

These covers had no holes. I had them machined to accept the breather and a pcv. I yank the breather out to add oil.

See the oil fill tube at the front of the intake right above the fuel pressure guage. I have a 63 PCV fitting screwed into the rear of the center carb. It has a small, about 1/8" hole in it to draw in crankcase fumes. Works perfect, no leaks, no need for holes in the valve cover.

Where does the pvc draw from if not through the valve cover, does it draw from under the intake?

Mine draws from the oil fill tube. The cap is sealed and trere is a small hose tied into the oil fill tube running to the center carb base. You can see it right above the fuel pressure guage.
