Default 454 build question..

Looking at an engine that has been bored .30 over and rebuilt with new internals. I want to build a high performance engine, but I am scared the pistons and rings wont hold out. Plus I don't know if they are flat top, domed, etc. Should I just pull them and rebuild the whole thing or will it be ok?

What sort of HP engine are you thinking about?

Do you have a list of the components that are in the engine now?

What type and CR are the current pistons?
What type of connecting rods does it have?
Crank?
2 or 4 bolt block?
What heads are installed?

See , all of this makes a difference depending on what power level you are looking to go to.

You can make a nice street engine without a lot of expensive parts. If you are going all out for a big HP engine, you need the expensive stuff.

If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there :-)

If it's a recent rebuild, would the builder know what's in it? There should be some identifying marks on the pistons. Post them here or try google. There are many BB pistons,..some for closed chamber heads, or open. If dished or domed, how much so? Also, are they cast or forged or hypo's? You'll You'll need to know all this before moving forward.

As far being scared, if the rebuild was done correctly, nothing to fear,..it's a Chevy big block which is plenty tough.

I will try to find out more info on what it was rebuilt with. The guy was supposed to check for me and hasn't replied back with any info. I will post as soon as I find out. I am looking to build a quick street engine. Maybe 600hp would be pushing my limit. Trying to keep it around 5 or under.

You can build up to around 550HP without much problem.

So I am assuming that 1.25 to 1.5 HP/CI is a safe route to go no matter what pistons are in there? Also, I shot the guy another email and I am waiting on a reply. When I find out the build specs I will fill you all in.
