Default Re-use Head Gasket??

I had to pull the heads off my motor after they had been torqued...but the engine was NEVER FIRED. Both heads came off without any gasket damage. Can I re-use them??
Also:: I have ARP head bolts. How many torque sequences do you think they can stand before they stretch beyond use?
Thanks guys...
Eddie

If they are decent composition style you'll be OK. If they are steel shim..it might be iffy.

Done it many times with the std Fel Pro blues. Cometic markets theirs as being able to reuse,,,and then of course copper ones are re-used all the time.

I, personally, would never reuse a head gasket. They are not that expensive. Just me though

Do it right Eddie! You don't want to take the heads off again. The ARP bolts will be fine to reuse. Keep me posted!

I've re-used the fel-Pro Blue after the torque. No problems with leaks. You're fine to reuse the the fel Pro's if you hadn't fired the motor.

I bought a cheap one to check piston to valve clearance, kept it for future use as a tool.

I was told that if the gasket has already been torqued down fully, it should not be reused.

Keep in mind that if they leak, you'll be tearing the engine down again. To me, it's just not worth the risk.

If the bolts stretch, either you over torqued them, or they're not good bolts to begin with.

Head bolts are designed to stretch.

I guess I should've used a different term. Bolts stretch when torqued, but return again when loosened. If a bolt yeilds, in other words, does not return to it's original length, it has been over torqued and is junk.

The stretch after torque is what gives you clamping force. Higher quality bolts stretch less giving more accurate torque values. Think I'll go one more round with the ARP.

At this point....$70 IS expensive! Standard Felpro 1014 .039 composite permaseal looked like new when removed, but I was worried about the fire ring not sealing again when re-torqued.

That would be my concern too. I know the feeling about $70 making a difference on the budget. Check with felpro, couldn't hurt but I would hate to see you take it apart again. Good luck.

yea the 327 engine i finished a little bit back used three sets of good intake gaskets and two sets of head gaskets. Sucked at the time but I'm glad now. Just not worth the anxiety.

But think of the $70 PLUS other repairs should it not seal correctly. Again, just my opinion

I was in your shoes last year. Wiped a cam on start up due to improper valvetrain setup. I decided taking a chance on having to do it all over again wasn't worth the cost. I ended up getting a new set of 1017s off of ebay for about what I would pay for one locally.

In your case you can reuse! We did plenty of static work on samples and then placed on dyno engines with no issues. Most situations required replacing but again, in your case, it will be fine. Theres a solid core wire under the S/S armor, there will be no problems with combustion seal leakage. Next the coolant sealing beads and gasket body, in good shape, they will be ok to reuse.

With those fasteners you'd probably wear out the threaded holes in the block before issues with stretch. As long as you follow torque specs.

Motor on!
Later.
