Or you could just bypass your heater.(it's easier) You can buy a bypass adapter(plastic)for less than $5 at any auto store. It has a 3/4 on one end and 5/8 on the other. No cutting required, use the clamps you already have.

that's the one. just so you don't make a mistake its the top hose. You can get a shutoff valve at home depot or lowes in the plumbing dept. you will also need a four inch copper pipe threaded on both ends which fits the S-off and the size of the 5/8 hose. Cut the pipe in half and use hose clamps on either side of the S-off. Works great no more unwanted heat.

It maybe all in my head, but when I just closed off one hose (the one from the intake manifold), I still could feel some heat coming from under the dash....but when I closed off the other hose, the heat stopped.....

I used both quick open valves and nipples ( like Bob's photo ) except I painted black and mounted down low near firewall next to heater core out of sight .

Some people do both, I valved only the hose that was input flow to the core and it works fine, no more heat in the cockpit during summer....I used a PVC hot water heater valve, it works fine, less weight then brass, painted it black with hi temp spray paint...I guess, pick your poison, valve it or connect both hoses in a loop, they will both work

I installed one on each hose in case my 34 yr. old heater core started leaking at an inoppertune moment. Well sure enough last summer I found droplets on the floor mat and blocked it in . It is still closed for now .

I don't know why some people try to reinvent the wheel. They sale these cutoffs at most auto supply stores, no reason to go to Home Depot and buy valves and fittings. Go to and autosupply store and say "I need a 5/8 inch and a 3/4 inch heater hose cutoff valve."

Be sure to check the temp limits on those Home Depot valves. I think they are something like 140F, not 195F.
