Default Installing & Removing Valve Seals...

I have a pair of 195 Trick Flow heads, need to remove the black TFS viton seals and re-instal. These have the wide metal band that holds the seal to the guide. Changing springs and have to change the spring cup. So the seals have to come off to get the cups of!
Do I need special tools to remove and re-intal? Thanks, Mark

Default Tools - Yes!

In the past when I had those seals on my heads, there are two "Tools" that are required to install those seals.

First is an installation driver, Most of the time they are plastic. There is also a clear thin plastic sleeve that goes over the valve stem to ease the seal past the locking grooves in the stem. This protects the lips of the seal from the grooves in the valve stem.

Whenever I removed the seals, they were considered damaged by the valve stem grooves. I always replaced the seals when that happened.

Perhaps there are those who reuse them, I never did.

Default New Seals

I understand that those are new seals.

Here is what happens when you pull the seal off.

The top of the seal fits the valve stem very tightly. Because of this tight fit, when you dislodge the seal and begin to slide it up the valve stem, the keeper recesses are very sharp and can actually cut the material from the top/tight fit area of the seal.

When this happens, the sealing surface of the viton seal can be cut/enlarged/damaged.

If this is a street engine, if you watch what you are doing, you can probably get away with reusing them. Just watch for any severe cutting of the seal when you pull it off the valve stem.

On a race engine, getting oil into the combustion chamber would cause detonation, not something you wanted to happen.

Give it a try, the worst that can happen is you buy a new set of seals.

Mark,

I would call Summit on the tools but in the past, I got the installer and two plastic sleeves with the seals.
