Headlight centers are too lo for most states and their safety inspections....not DOT approved height....gotta be 18? inches, maybe 15? but not ~10-12 for sure....lousey bastards....
Not sure about CA rules on classic cars w/ QQ plates but on the east coast if you have the QQ plates on the car you never need to bring it to state inspection. So you can take off cats, & put the head lights in the grill. As far as a patch for the openings just bring it to a good fiber glass body shop and have them sealed off the seam. G/L post pic's
Why would you want to do that ?? You might think it's a cool idea now but later especialy if you try and sell the car will probably regret it.
That's my 2 cents worth.
1) What do you guys think of glassing over where the headlights pop-up and placing rectangular headlights behind the lower grill area?
2) Where does one get fiberglass patch panels to cut-to-fit and glass in-place in the holes where the stock headlights came from?
Thanks!
Ecklers use to sell both the fiberglass buckets for in grille placement of the lights, and the filler panels for the original openings. I bought the 4 pc kit from some individual, can't remember if it was on this forum, or on eBay. I do have pictures of them if your interested. The filler pieces have a lip around the edge that bonds to the lower side of the front surround, makes a nice clean fit and maintains the slight contour of the nose area.
When I was looking for a Corvette in the early 80's I remember seeing numerous C2's with the headlight area glassed over for a smooth look. usually a couple of square headlight were mounted in the grille area. I doubt if this mounting would meet state DOT guidelines for night driving.
speaking of headlights...... dont you ever get annoyed when a raised truck is behind you and the friggin lights are like 3' high and right in your face....better yet when a newer car with those bright azz halogens is coming the other way and practically blinds you ...wtf...... i dont think the engineers think about on coming traffic when they design them lights....
I would like to see the pics of behind the grill headlites. I am considering do this mod while I have my front clip off. I have already blended the front bumper & Hood, plus made the front clip a tilt front-end
Well see my site, and note the Eckler's sugar scoop trays, and having mounted late Camaro bulbs....then note they are filled for the back 1/2 of the opening about 5" of the 10" opening....so 1/2 size....
I never saw patch panels but they should be easy to make, just pull a mold off both headlamp doors and use that to make the part, it will have the right compound curvature to fit the body perfectly.
