Default First timer question !

I have just the bell housing bolts and the flywheel bolts remaining to remove the block from my 74. The heads came off quite easily and you folks were right....bout 75 lbs each. Glad my 25 yr old had dropped by for a Sunday visit.

Can someone confirm that the block should seperate "fairly easily" when the bell housing and flywheel bolts are removed? My book only covers pulling the engine / tranny out as one. I only need the block out.
Thanks..........Fred

Fred -
You don't have to pull the flywheel bolts out... you can't get to those until after you've pulled the engine. You just need to pull the bellhousing bolts. If you have an automatic, you also need to pull the 3 torque converter bolts out of the flexplate.

Out of curiosity, why did you pull the heads off with the engine in the car if you're pulling the engine out anyway...? That seems like a heckuva lot of extra work that you didn't need to do...

Extra Work is my nickname! When I started this "adventure", I didn't intend to pull the motor out. When I discovered the UGLY cam bearings, I decided to go ahead and have the crank...heads....cylinders re-done. I will be taking it to a buddy's machine shop in a few days.

I appreciate your and others help and advice during the work. I have always been a pretty good wrench turner, but not this deep before. The machine shop will do all the bearing work....I will take it from there.

yes, spin the fly wheel around and you will be able to access the torque converter bolts one at a time through the removable inspection plate........ don't be surprised if they are metric
