Awhile back someone was thinking of installing a 454 truck engine into thier vette. I was wondering how they made out. I know most truck engines had the tall deck and four bolt mains. but cubic inch is cubic inch I ran across a 73 3/4 ton pickup with only 63,000 miles (was used as a family camper truck) also has the turbo 400 tranny for $750.00 might be a good swap candidate for a few years of fun. reasonable winter project What do you think. :U
The tall block engine usually was found in BIG trucks and buses, not pickups or Suburbans. You can check out which block the motor has by looking at the casting numbers and going to http://www.mortec.com and looking for which blocks are "tall" blocks. There is a very good chance that your truck engine is a normal height block.
I have just removed a "truck" block from my car. It is about 1/2" taller than a passenger block. These truck blocks came from older big trucks and larger commercial type vehicles. I had no real clearance problems with it. Everything above the block will be a little higher. This will affect some mounting brackets, header fit and location. You will need to modify a couple of brackets. A taller deck height allows for more stroke. My motor was stroked and bored to 496 CI. If you are wanting a truck block to get more cubic inches, then this could be a cheaper way to go. Otherwise, I would stay with the standard 454 set up and spend the same money on good modifications.
