Default 68 Vette Smog System?

Please Help!
Anybody have a good idea on what a working (or non working) complete smog setup would run for a 68 327/ 350 hp, manual, non air car? I've seen prices all over the place, some are nuts! Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!

You are probably better to ask this on the NCRS site. They keep up better with prices on things like that.

If this is for restoration purposes and you want it to be NCRS correct, be prepared to pay a small fortune. $1500.00 would not be out of line. There were some 1 year only parts for the '68 AIR system. If you just want the AIR system installed and are not interested in it being NCRS correct, then you could probably piece it together for a lot less. If you search the archives, there was a recent discussion on this very same subject. I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Ah yes, the 'board's brilliant idea of pollution control---pump fresh air directly into some hot cast iron exhaust manifolds. Beautiful stuff, these smart folks. I've got an all original 68 setup in a box somewhere. Even the belt. I replaced mine with a belt-driven popcorn machine for those Saturday night cruises.

'68 AIR is essentially one year only. If you want NCRS, it's going to cost. I've read articles outlining how to take later year components and retrofit them to '68s, but it involves modifications, grinding, etc. The mods would work if you needed to pass emissions standards, but won't pass muster with NCRS judges.

Call Bill Hodel: He has no web site, not even a tooll free number

I dont have his number anymore, but you can fins him in Heemings under smog equipment, or emmisions controls.

Be warned. The 68 is dif from 69 later. I had a COMPLETE system from Bill, and it was great.

Be warned, you will need all brackets, smog pump, valve, injector tubes, and exh manifolds with AIR fittings

Bill is an expert in this stuff, and knows his chevy and Vette stuff

Prepare t

I have a complete 68 diverter valve assembly off a 327/350 vette. I talked to Bill Hodel about it's value awhile back and boy, was I surprised I would entertain selling it, but you probably won't like his advised price

avalonjohn---I should qualify my statement(s) by saying mine's big block. This was a Kali blacktag car, and its first 'serious' restoration was in San Diego in about the 80's, before the modified smog laws. It required original equipment, regardless of how ridiculous it was. He lost it in a divorce, and it sat for a decade or so. So I end up with about a 550-600hp LS6-based (roughly) motor with the stock cast iron manifolds and AIR system. I couldn't tell you if the setup is real NCRS 68, 69, or some aftermarket job, but it is flawless. As in brand-new appearing. But again, for a fatblock. Sorry.

I bought a complete system for my 69 smalblock over ten years ago from Bill Hodel. As I recall the price was $400 back then. No idea what the same setup goes for now. I would agree with Melvin that Bill is very knowledgable in this area. He may be able to help you by substituting some of the hard to find$$ parts with functional replacements.

Hello,
I spent a few years gathering up all the parts to my 68 smog system. I got lucky with ebay on several occasions by acquiring some of the parts for reasonable dollars but, I think now it's hard to get a deal on ebay today. My set-up $532.00:

Original 68 Diverter valve with the DH stamp in great shape - $157.00
Original 68 smog tubes with check valves -$50.00
All the Adjusting brackets- $40.00
68 exhaust manifolds - $200.00
Wittek Hose clamps - I traded something for these. (Can't remember exactly what...old age)
Rebuilt 68 smog pump- $60.00 You can still buy original remanufactured pumps from the parts houses. The pumps want have the original white fan, but I think somebody is repoing these now. The reman pumps are painted. I stripped mine and refinished it back to the factory appearance. I also took the advice of some experts and gutted the pump and plugged the exhaust holes. The set-up is for show only.
And as a bonus, the pump that I purchased was an early pump that had the correct date code.
68 pump pulley- still searching, $15.00 using a replacement GM smog pulley.
68 smog hoses- still searching, $10.00 using replacement hoses for now.

Good luck with your seach.
Bryan

Be aware: The proper color "fan" fins on the pump is opauque, and white. Mot solid white or black. Bill brought that up, and it states the same in a resto book I have

Some 68 pumps also had a small circular "valve" on top of the pump body. SOme didnt. To this day, I cant figure which models may have had this, or if it was just what ever pump was waiting on the assem line

Be aware, In NC, and most states, to pass a inspection: If it came with any smog equip from the fact, it must be there. Im not talikng a sniffer test , Im just talking about a visual inspection

Sniffer test is another subject altohether

But in NC, they passed a 35 yr old except from ins, so moot point

But many inspectors dont know what to look for in older cars like a 68, so it mostly isnt looked at
