Default Fan shroud removal

Is it possible to remove the large fan shroud from a 71 sb w/ac without removing the radiator?

The fan shroud is actually two pieces. A large piece and a small extension. I'm trying to install the extension, but can not get all three screws lined up. Any two will go in, but nor all three. I don't want to cut it or damage anything. The only thing I can think of is to pull the large shroud, but it does not look easy, if at all possible without removing the radiator.

Thanks for any tips or experience.

Sorry, can't answer on a 71, but feel your pain. I just put mine back in on my 79 today, and there's no way the shroud is coming out or in with the radiator in place.

I just went through this brain damage with my '72 in order to get my radiator out. However, prior to this I had already removed the alternator and A/C compressor. The last piece of the puzzle was removing the fan. Then, the shroud came out pretty easily. I don't see how you can remove the radiator with the shroud still in place!

Default What a PITA

Well, I just about had it out, however, it hung up on one of the bolts that secures the fan to the water pump. I think I could have wrestled it out, but not without damaging something. Fortunately, just getting it most of the way out provided a better angle to work on getting the extension installed. Still took another hour, but it's done. What a PITA. Everything is back together, but I still have one concern. The shroud to fan clearance is not even all the way around. On the driver's side, I have almost an inch. On the pass side, I have about 1/4 inch. I don't see any way to push the fan over any more. Am I missing something?

appreciate the replies...

Just did mine. I simply removed the fan, pulley and removed the hoses that were in the way. It took a little geometrical thinking but came out fine. Repainted and went back in just fine. Visually, it looks impossible because it gets wider towards the bottom. You have to turn it as you slide it upward. I did scratch my radiator a bit on the top but only because I was a bit anxious. Touched it up, no problem though.

I would fix this... your engine might move under rev or load causing the fan to hit.
