I'm trying to put an oil filter adapter on my recently machined 327 block. The bolts that are supplied with the Mr. Gasket kit I bought are too large in diameter. The block is machined for smaller diameter bolts. I'm guessing that this 327 was an old cannister type filter application and now I'm trying to convert it to the screw on type. I've never done this before so I need some direction on what to use to do this.
The only thing I have bought so far is the actual adapter on the far left in this picture. Do I need another adapter for the conversion? Does it attach to the rest of the ones pictured to convert it to the screw on type?
Here's the best picture I have of what mine looks like now...
All you need to do is bolt the adapter you have (the one on the far left) and spin your filter on .... You do NOT need any of the other abapters that are in the picture... Good luck and remember to smear a little oil on the filter o-ring before you spin it on for easy removal on you next oil change. butchford
That's what I was thinking, but I'm not very comfortable with swapping out the bolts to make it fit. Something tells me I'll need something else. Does anyone have a picture of an old 265 or 283 that has the canister type housing on it so I can compare?

The oil filter conversion parts are the same for the SB's and the BB's. You need the original adapter that came from the cannister setup, G.M. part #5573842. You need to use it in conjunction with the Mr. Gasket #1270 adapter. This adapter comes with the 2 long, 1/4-20 x 2.000" bolts, the conversion adapter, a new "O" ring, and some red "loctite" to complete the install.
Not sure of any of the components you've pictured, with the exception of the on the far left, but the setup as I've listed above is the same one we've used for well over 35 years now. It lets you use the same "spin-on" oil filter numbers as the later Chevies. The one on the far left is for use with the original spin-on filters used on '68 and later.
Thanks, Gary in N.Y.
P.S. We still use/sell about 20 of these pieces every year. Most of the resto's we build choose to use them as opposed to the cannister. It's something that's easily changeable for shows!
