The plastic fan on my junkyard CS144 was busted. I had a steel 130 fan around, it fit fine. We'll see how well it cools the alternator.

As I understand ya'll, the CS130 overheats and the CS 144 does not. Yet the CS130 has an internal fan? Batman - are you looking for the steel CS130 fan to cool better than the plastic CS144 fan?

Part of the reason the CS130 over heats, is it's too small for some of the applications GM used it on, so it was working hard all the time. The other issue is that there is a black metal disc inside that keeps air from over all of the internals save the small heat sink. Removing this disc allows air to flow over everything and there are no barriers aiding in the creation of hot air pockets.

Does the CS144 case also fit for the 69? And do you have any advice on only buying OEM from GM?

I see what you are saying on the overheating - thanks. So even aside from the problems with the black disc, the CS130 still has an additional fan that evidently could not overcome the negatives from the black disk .... and when the black disk was eliminated on the CS144, the need for a internal fan like the CS130 was eliminated?

The CS144 will also fit fine with the exception of the upper adjustable support. It really depends on the clocking. If you can find one with 12 & 6 clocking, like a stock SI alt, then it may just be some minor adjustments. The CS130 I installed was a 10 & 6 case, so I had some major modifications to do to the upper arm. I have never installed a CS144 but Batman did, and all he had to do was move the mounting location of that upper arm to the lower bolt on the water pump.

I know the internal fan on the early CS130s was designed poorly and didn't move air very well. Just created turbulence in the pocket of hot air. They changed the design, and it was a lot better. By the time someone figured out about the black disc, that alt was already out of use and here was no point to spend R & D to fix the problem.

Take the black disc out and with the new style fan and low demand...it will work just fine.

OK - well then with my lower demand the CS130 will do. I will check on the clocking and prices - if the CS144 is not too bad - I will plan for the future. thanks again!

The 144 requires a bit of minor modification to fit.

I actually moved the arm from the water pump to an open hole 1" outboard and higher on the cylinder head, then I had to put a 1" spacer under the bolt to get it into the right position, and I had to use a grinder to open the slot a bit for the larger metric bolt on the alternator. I think I might have a longer arm made so I can bring it back down to the water pump bolt where it belongs.

Either way, two choices with minor modifications still beat the alternative in my book.
