Default Surging while at a cruise speed

This is my wifes 71 Z/28.While drivivg along minding your own business the car keeps surging unless you give it gas and it gets up and goes.Anybody else have this problem.I've had a Holley and a Q-jet and it still keeps doing it

Lean? Fuel filter? Float adjustment? The tank sock (filter)?

I'd say it was likely something in the fuel delivery.

Sounds lean. That can be carb...or maybe too much timing. Do you have vacuum advance and how much timing is it adding? Some of those cans add 15*+.

I do have a vac advance.Might be right about the timming.Thats the next thing on the list.It still has a points dist.Put new points in two days ago.tested the vac advance, it works. Then again the fuel thing sounds about right also. All of these are in the plan within the week.Is there an inline fuel filter between the tank and the pump on these cars.I've owned many of them but I'm not as young as I once was, dang that sounds like the name of an album.Speaking of,get this.I showed my 12 yr. old Gdaughter my album collection.I took out one of my pristine Foghat albums and took it out of the cover and it shined like new.Well her eyes got as big as the moon. She said"Poppy,I've never seen one of these before,it's beautiful,Can I have it?I'll be real careful with it and put it on my dresser for display!!!Then I brought out my Beatles White album with the white vinal records, that was it,she wanted to see every one of them.Damm I'm talking to you and there is a possibility you have never seen one!!!Anyway about the inline filter between the tank and fuel pump,is there one?

Try unplugging the vacuum advance to see if it gets better.

The only filter should be between carb and pump.....unless someone added one somewhere.

I doubt it's a fuel filter if it runs Ok when you open it up some. It's lean in cruise conditions..either carb or too much timing act similar.

What mods..or is it stock?

LOL They play down here all the time. Still sound great. Not that many people knew of them back then

Should just be the sock in the tank and the one in the qjet. The float level being too low is also a cause, but if you haven't changed it then....

How many miles on the distributer?

The new lead singer of Foghat is a long time friend of mine. They were/are my favroite bands.I've seen them so many times that they got to know me.Before Rod price died he would come to Savannah and play the blues bar and would allways sit with my wife and me between sets.Have many fond memories.Anyway.I'm thinking too much timing is a good place to start. The car don't get driven as much as it should. That is about to change. Thanks for all the help. When it gets running right and my wife don't drive it like she stole it,I'm selling it.I will have it on the road by this weekend barring any unforseen problems.I had it running last weekend and the carb puked on me but I took it back and got a new one.The timing is the first thing I'm going to do.That I remember how to do.It's the points system.I keep swearing I'm going HEI and I will very soon.I'm sick of points.

Good idea for the Hei if your not ncrs. Probably see a world of difference. I started using these.

Can't beat them for the price.

Get the timing perfect and then you can go back and sort out the carb. Tell what you got for a carb in the mean time.

Points really aren't so bad. You have to cheek up for GOOD ones...not normal cheap parts store stuff. cheap ones will move all over the place and not hold a setting. I ran a set of $15 Accel's for over 7 years. They were able to make over 800 hp even then. They did start to bounce finally on the dyno at 6900 (remember-7 years old!). A new set had me right back in business!

Other than that, a Pertronix setup will fit under stock cap.

Foghat??? Man.....I'm starting to dig up some old memories with that name!!
