Routing the cables is everything! Take care routing around steering column & heater box to keep a smooth arc. Make sure levers on console operate full range & that fresh air flappers operate smoothly & not very stiff. I did this many many yrs ago - I seem to remember replacing my metal core cables (made my own) keeping length same, center adjustments are to align levers to equal alignment in closed position for visual effect, the levers only go maybe 70% of travel you might think by looking at slots in console trim. Hope that helps.
