there's a slot in the linkage that a "tool" slides into. this aligns the shifter plates. then the linkages are set so that the clevis and attachment points on the trans just line up. this "tool" is nothing more than a flat piece of steel about 1/16 thick and 5/8 wide and 2 inches long. any shop manual will give detailed info.

I just made my own out of a piece of scrap metal. It worked fine and made the adjustments pretty easy.
I'm a 4-speed virgin and just finished my install. Can you be more specific? Any pics?
I believe mine was slightly different in dimesions because my trans is a ST-10....For your 69 you prob have a muncie...Funny how Chiltons doesn't address 69 transmissions \
For the 63-68 muncie 4 speeds..."construct a block 1/8" gauge by 41/64" wide" (mine was about 3" long)....wiggle it into the shift lever bracket assembly and then do your adjustments. Chiltons has a reasonable description of the procedure.
