My father in law bought a 82 Vette 3 years ago down in Florida and drove it here to OKC. After they arrived the car would not start so he put a new battery in it which ran down after driving it around for awhile. So the car has been sitting this whole time because he could not figure out what was wrong. Over the weekend I notice that the fuseable link fuse was blown. I put a new one in and soon as I connected the battery it blew the fuse.
I looked over all the cables and wires in the battery compartment and everything looks good, same with wires connected to altenator. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start on troubleshooting this issues before sending it to a mechanic?
in your next post or as soon as you can, mention which fuseable link was bad and which fuse was blown. check the wiring all around the starter motor; could have a short in that area.
The fuse that was blown is in the battery compartment. The positive cable is connected to a post inside the compartment and the fuseable link runs from that post to what looks like the computer for the car. All of this inside the battery compartment.
I hope this helps. I looked over the fuses in the fuse compartment and they are all okay.
the '68 didn't have a computer. don't know what that could be. there are other '68s on the forum who might chime in about that. if that is an accessory added by prior owner, it still should not prevent charging. still need to check the wiring around the starter i think.
At least I actually read the question. I can't help with knowledge on the 82, so I would suggest getting the factory service manual for 82, and the AIM (Assembly instruction manual). Yet still I am going to guess, just as the others have, that your father in laws car has a dead short somewhere between the battery and the starter motor. Look for burned through insulation near an exhaust pipe or header. And yes they seem to come into contact near the starter because of starter replacement and bubba not checking to see that the cable doesn't touch the header.
sorry 'bout that, read too quickly at lunch break - username letters were larger than those in post, and i get a little dyslexic sometimes. either way. the cheap wiring diagram that i have shows only two wires to the positive battery terminal, one red and one black. it does not show wire sizes and it could be wrong. sorry that's all i have. agree with 71rdster - need to get manuals to help with wiring.
