If you don't have access to the proper mic's,,you can get close with feeler gauges. Bring piston to exactly TDC....lay a straightedge across bore where it goes across the pin are. Pointing toward the lifter valley and outside of block. Slip feeler gauges in right above the pin and see what you get.

Your piston is probably level (hopefully) or within a few thousandths of level of the block. You are measuring the flat spot across the piston, not the dome.

I doubt you are like Jim and have the piston sticking out of the hole

Uhh.....you know....uh......I got all wrapped up in that quench stuff!! Yeah that's it......

I have to be pretty careful with head gasket selection.....my pistons and heads get slightly *polished* in the quench area. You should have seen Zwede's face when he saw them!! Don't think I can go much tighter!!

Hey, no problem...that is proper prior planning !! TIGHT quench makes power in an NA motor.....lots of swirl going on. That is probably part of the reason you can run 11+ to 1 on pump gas with no problem.

I am still debating where I am going to set the quench on my 555.....got to do some more research on heavy nitrous motors. I had a guy tell me (who knows) say to run .100 quench for my heavy nitrous 555. I can not imagine .100 for a steel rod motor, might be a real pooch of the gas....'corse I will never run it off the gas, cept maybe to start it
