Take our advice: even if I got stopped in a nice area like Scottsdale (north of Phoenix) I'd call a tow truck. They work 24/7 and they're fast. Your peace of mind is worth it, believe me.
good luck, Mark
take that 2 dollar towing ins that we have on our policys and cash in on it mine cost s 2 dollars per 6 mo or 4 dollars a year per car . have it towed and get you moneys worth . I have 1 of my cars towed if for nothing else to save fuel once a year
Since you just got it back from the guy being rebuilt, I would bet on that when he re-installed the engine he did one of two things
1). did pay attention to routing the wires back correctly and you have melted a wires insulation down and know it is shorting out somewhere.
2). he didn't put the wires back tight enough on the alternator or battery and you have not been charging your battery back fully and it finally charged down enough it wont turn the engine over which explains why the lights still come on but cant turn over the engine. Or he didn't put the ground wire to the frame back on when he re-installed it this would prevent the battery from being properly grounded and effect its charging ability as well.
Either way you just got it back from him, make him come get it and fix it.
Ok... I'm praying I dont' have to say "I told you so" but it'll be alot cheaper to tow than to buy a new corvette. Best of luck.
That'll take him 6 weeks to do that.
I thought about that after I said it, I think reason why he is stuck is that guy slammed it together to get it out of there. If the guy didn't make much money on it the first time he would be in no hurry to fix it.
I would just put a new battery in it and get it home. Then trace & tighten up the wiring.
Ok , vette is currently at A1 auto service.
The same place that rebuilt my alternator.
I ended up leaving her in the lot overnight and thankfully everything seems to be where it should, I didn't really need those rally wheel caps anyways =)p (kidding)
The guys over at A1 auto service are relatively inexpensive and have a great reputation !!
I was told I would have the vette back this afternoon.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is a result of johnny rushing the job (after letting it sit for a couple months) but hopefully it was just the starters time to go!!
I will post what the findings are when I pick her up (hopefully) this afternoon.
Please no ""I told you so's" my wife has given me plenty already !! =)p
Glad to hear that vette was fine this morning. It will be interesting to hear what the problem was.
Thanks man.. I was more than a little nervous !!
Turns out the selinoid was bad on the starter. It says here on the sheet everything they did to it.. something about bearings and such.. can't really read the hand writing very well.
All in all I am out $85. that's for having the starter rebuilt and the tow. Not bad at all I thought.
My vette even starts with a little enthusiasm now =)
I see you are in Kinston, NC. Man that place has really gone down hill if there is a good side and a bad side of town. Went to school at LCC for a while and there wasn't a bad side of town while I was there. Where is the bad side? Glad to hear you got your car back on the road!
So you attended the last chance college huh?
If you Bare off of HWY 70 onto Heritage street (old main street) right in that area. To the left of Heritage is "Historic Kinston" where our barbershop is, to the right is the "Prajects"... nasty area.. !!
I figured the $85 wasn't bad at all!! definitely an investment
I just got off of work and hoped in the vette and now she won't crank.
The engine dosent turnover... it just goes CLUNK (the brake light comes on and the volts go down but she doesn't turover)
any ideas??
could it be the starter??
I really don't want to leave my car here overnight !! Not a good side of town when the sun is down.
Had problem like this some years ago and also got quickadvice to bang on the starter with tool and it helped me then but not nice crawling under car so I bought a restored starter and replaced the old one, funny to remember as I mannged to do it without lifting the car, but after a while I got the same problem with this starter, someone told me its due to the rotor inside the starter stops a fraction of a milllimeter from right position it doesnt get currency next turn on the starterkey !!??
Anyway, the trick that have saved me several times came to me as a gift from heaven, I happened to disconnect the battery with the green turning *** I put on the negative poole to prevent theaft. When I reconnect the batterycurrency it seemes as the drop in voltage lets away the preasure from the starterrotor and puts it in right position !!
So now if the strater doesnt turn I just put my arm behind my back open the batterycompartment turn the *** quickly off and on !! Lovely !!
