Default 383 stroker kit on the L48

AS you can see from my earlier post, I'm lookin to get some power out of my L48 (yes, it's an L48). How about a 383 stroker kit? what kind of hp would that give me? I know the kit is between $700-$1000, how much would labor be to install it?

I believe the kit is jsut crank and rods you still need to have the motor rebuilt. ( cylinders bored, new bearings, pistons etc. )
Take it from me and rebuild what you have it will cost you less, look at how much bseery has spent on < 350HP crate engine.

HEY !! I resemble that coment !! :D

Yeah -- I spent $4500 TOTAL (engine, parts, labor, rental of hoist) everything -- complete -- nothing left to do -- $4500.

But, I also was able to have the car running within a week.
And, had I not changed to the Holley carb, and waited for parts to be powder coated, we could have had the engine swapped and car running in the same day !! No problem, it took us 2 1/2 hours to pull and about 2 hours to install. The rest was downtime waiting for parts or me playing with the carb.

How much time would it be to pull the motor, strip the parts, take it to the machine shop, wait for new internals, get the motor back, put it all back together, and then re-install it.

To me the extra $1000 was worth it. Besides, I also have a BRAND NEW block, not a bored out 2 bolt main block. I also have a 12 month warrenty. And it was built by GM, not some local shop.

The reasons I went WITH the ZZ4 are endless, just make sure you take them all into account before you decide your plan of action.

Excuse me while I go burn some rubber !!!

I have an L-48 as well. I checked my block numbers (drivers side behind the head near where block bolts to tranny) and the last 3 numbers were 010. When I dropped the pan I found that my motor had a 4 bolt main here is what I did.
bored .030 over
TRW forged 9 1/2 to 1 flat head pistions
new crank polished
double roller timing chain
comp 268 cam
ZZ-4 aluminum intake
ZZ-4 distributor, curved
heads milled and worked to 202/164
Edelbrock 750 carb
I have not yet had the motor dyno tested, I am still waiting to break the motor in properly. I have 150 miles on the motor now and will not get it tested until there are at least 2000 on it. But I will tell you this I can feel the power. Putting all of the information into a program that my friend and engine builder has the computer came back with around 330 HP. That is pleanty for me considering that I am not going to race it, but just wanted the additional HP and that wonderful cam lop sound. I have had one person say to me "That motor doesn't sound like any L-48 that I have ever heard"
:D That was just what I wanted to hear from someone :D
Worked for me anyway.

That sounds a lot like my motor. I have a 355, 10/1 flat tops, 67cc SR-Torquer IIs, (pocket ported, guides blended), comp cams 270H, Edel' performer, 600 carter AFB. It ran 15 flat with a set of 78cc '882 smog heads so I'm hoping for 14s. My problem is that piece of crap factory exaust system. The 383 kits aren't that expensive for the cast piston sets but you have to remember that most have to be balanced and you have to replace your flexplate/flywheel and balancer. I under stand that the crank swap alone with nothing else changed is worth something like 40fp of torque.
