Pull #1 spark plug, stick your finger in the hole, and have someone bump the engine over until it blows your finger out. Look at the timing marks and rotate the engine until #1 on the timing marks isright around TDC. Drop the disty in with the rotor pointing where you want it to be for #1 plug wire on the cap. Gently puch down on the disty, have someone bump the engine over until the oil pump shaft lines up- you can tell when the disty drops that last 3/8 and seats on the manifold.
Install the cap, wires, and set the timing. Lock the disty down-- Done! Go drink a beer.

when you say
"Look at the timing marks and rotate the engine until #1 on the timing marks isright around TDC"
do you mean rotate the engine to line up the timing mark on the balancer with the Zero on the tab?

Yep - then check your distributor rotor...it MUST be pointing to the #1 spark plug terminal on the dist. cap. If it isn't you have something wrong....

Pull the valve cover and make sure the valves on the #1 cylinder are closed when lining up the timing mark or you'll be 180 off in your timing. The crank turns twice for every one rotation of the distributor.
