Default Antenna Removal?

Hi all

I have 1968 coupe with the standard fixed shaft antenna. I just installed a new lift to store it on high in my garage, and I have to remove the antenna to clear the ceiling.

My 67 has the same issue, but the shaft is VERY easy to remove by simply unscrewing it from the base. The 68 shaft doesn't come off in the same way. Am I correct that the only way to remove the antenna is to remove the entire base (large nut)? Wouldn't be that big a deal, except that even doing that there isn't enough slack to simply lay the antenna down on the car (wrapped of course to prevent scratches :-) ), and I can't unplug it from this point.

Is the shaft itself removable and maybe this one is just stuck after nearly 40 years?

Thanks

on my 70, just unscrew the top chrome nut and lift the shaft out. as you thought, just very tight from 40 years.

I'm going to agree. I think the top nut is 3/4 inch on my '69. I took mine out to switch it to an electric.

Nope, the 68 antenna mast screws out of the base just like the others. In fact it is the only year where the antenna base can be separated from the antenna wire. I suspect you mast is just frozen in the base.....

you can get medevial on it or replace the base/mast assy. Thats what I did, and you dont have to run all new wire

cheers
