alternator options?
Should I get a stock replacement?
I have a (previous owner) stereo that when cranked up all the way, or in other words, almost always, dims the lights...
I think someone said that an alternator from an 88 L98 camaro is higher amps and will fit my 77 L48/4 speed/power everything.
Will this work with existing wires/guages/brackets?
Thanks!
Jim

Just make sure it has the same mounting as yours.
In most GM cars they used what is called a 10-SI alternator, they are a dime a dozen. My 1980 has a larger housing and I was told that it is called a 15-SI and is more rare.
You can also get 100 amp units from Summit racing, they are the 10-SI type.
They have a lot of options ranging from upgrade kits to brand new alternators. I got a kit that upgraded my 42Amp to 80Amp.
Cost: $24.95 plus about 45 min of my time. They also have a kit for 105Amps for $30 or so if I remember correctly. That extra $100 or so left over will pay for a new intake manifold.
