Default 78 low fuel light

So, I'm being proactive, new vette owner, fixing the minor stuff. I get the low fuel light lens, get the socket, get the bulb, and put it all in. Turns out the light is on now all the time. Anyone have this experience before?

New to all of this and wanting to learn....my first real project car, althought it is in pretty good shape overall. Would a 79 shop manual answer all of the amateur "how to" as well as offer basic troubleshooting tips?

Not familiar with a "helms" manual, but how does that differ from the shop manual? I am looking for a troubleshooting guide, as well as the "how to take apart" kind of direction. Have somewhat of a technical background, so I can read a tech manual, just wondering which is best.

Appreciate the help!

1)Does your low fuel lamp socket have a small circuit board on the socket?
2) Helms is the publisher of the shop manual.

I have a 78 and use the 79 manual quite a bit because I don't have to wade through all the Chevy Nova, Chevelle, Impala stuff in the 78 Passenger manual. I do use the 78 for details in the event the 79 doesn't show something or shows something different than from what I'm looking at on the 78. As big birds points out, Helms is the official publisher for GM shop manuals.

An AIM or assembly instruction manual is also helpful and readily available through a variety of sources. All the vendors sell them and just put their cover on them but all are official GM AIMs.

Make sure you have the circuit board. Turns out I had the same problem and all it was was I didnt have the circuit board. When I changed all my bulbs I noticed that one was missing and decided to put one in. Turns out it was missing on purpose because I didnt have the circuit board. Circuit board looks like this.

Thanks for the replies. I pulled out the center gauge cluster, and there is a soft circuit board that conforms to the gauge cluster. The socket is stand alone, and turns into the circuit board. There is not separate circuit board, like the one pictured above.

I would suspect maybe a bad low fuel sensor in the tank maybe, just don't know if the circuit board is bad, would it make the light stay on all the time? Maybe there is a relay somewhere that is bad?

Appreciate the help with the manual. Going to get the 79 one for now!

You have to have this circuit board as above for the fuel low light to work. Yes light will stay on if you just put a bulb in. The flexible circuit board is for all the gages and lights behind the gages.
