Sorry thought this was a common problem since I've seen it in a few cars. When I go into gear there's a bang coming from the rear as it goes into gear.
you get a Bang because there may be a little slop in the drive line because of high milage. These things are not cadillacs, they have a crisper shift than most cars which is a desireable thing in a sports car
An idle that is too high will also cause the hard shift into gear.
C4's had a thing with shifting from R-to-D. The halfshafts would make a pinging sound when everything took up the slack. We fixed it by shooting spray undercoat inside the shafts.
Bottom line- with any wear, there are lots of joints that have to take up slack on our C3's. High idle, wear, etc., will make a bang changing directions.
