I accidently ordered the wrong size rods. Factory rods in my L82 are 5/16" and I got 3/8" 4130 rods. I have a new set of 3/8" guide plates already too. Can I use this combo in my 350? I see catalogs list both sizes for SBC's. What would the differences be? More weight to move I suppose??
most guide plate usage requires hardened pushrods. If neither set is hardened the point is moot. But that being said I believe you use the 3/8ths pushrod with the 3/8th's guide plate. Non hardened pushrods will wear excessively against the guide plate. I don't know if 4130's are the hardened ones or just the quality of steel content. I just order the ones that say hardened. Does this help any?

I suspect interference between the head and pushrods using the 3/8. I don't think the pushrod passages in the head are big enough for them. You;ll need to do a little machine work (drill)
Nothing wrong with 5/16 push rods. I know if there are 3/8 pushrods, i`m not aware of them for SB engines. BB`s are a different story, they go to 7/16.

Thanks guys, Both rods and guides are hardened. The holes in the heads below the guide seem to have about 1/16" clearance all around the rods when mocked up. Is that enough or should I throw it on the drill press and make them a little larger presuming its cool to run these larger 3/8 rods?
Might be a little over kill, but there going in, I'm not waiting for another set, Plus I ruined the packaging...
THANKS!!
You will have strong pushrods for sure, never tried it but with a 1.5
stanard rocker the holes may be big enough to handle it, if your
using 1.6 don't see that working without doing some enlarging,
look at everthing good.

The 3/8" rod tip seam to fit in the pocket fine. I stayed with the 1.5 rockers, just change to the roller type.
Now I just need a cam that will work on my 882 cast L82 heads. I need a new cam and want something equivilant or better. Summit #1105??
