Theres this system whereby people completely remove the mufflers. Called muffler eliminator system. Can a person simply remove the mufflers all together and have sexy ends welded on ? Or am I missing something here ?

I cannot see why you couldn't do that, the car will be a lot louder. I don't know if theres a system that eliminate mufflers other than chopping them out and replacing them with strait pipes, if you want loud exhaust get some side pipes and don't use inserts. good luck with whatever you decide.
Yes, those that run cat. converters can sometimes get away w/ no mufflers since the cat. will quiten the exhaust. I determined this a long time ago & have posted about it.
I ran with dual cats & no mufflers for a while. Beautiful sound but a bit on the high volume side. There's a point in my car where at about 30-40 mph the noise resonates a trim panel around the rear window & I found that annoying. At highway cruising speed the sound smoothens out & it's just great. Might be appropriate to carry a set of ear plugs if you have passengers who don't appreciate the same music as you do.
My 82 has the pipes going from the manifolds to the chrome tips without anything but pipe. You get the good with the bad, the sound is loud but the smell is stronger than normal. (Turns heads everywhere I go) My wife loves it! Thats the only one I have to please other than myself.
