I had some high rpm breakdown going on, and it turned out to be the points bouncing. I replaced them with a true tech set and it solved the problem, but they still seemed pretty flimsy and weak. So I ordered a set of Accel 48oz points, and man they are heavy duty and take considerable pressure to open. So my question is: do I have to worry about them wearing down the lobes on my distributor? I figure if I lube it up real good it should be fine, but I have seen some get wiped out in my time. Any wisdom on this, please share.
I use a little Mobil 1 grease on the cam and a drop of syn oil on the cam wiper pad. I have one set of Accel heavy duty points in a dual point dist and see no abnormal wear so far.
The rubbing block on the points is more likely to wear before the lobe on the distributor lobe. That material isn't as tough as the steel in the lobe.
I guess the potential is there for faster wear, but I doubt if it's likely. Use distributor grease which the point set likely came with and you shouldn't have a problem.
Since the rubbing block might wear a bit faster, you might check the dwell and timing more often just to make sure and keep it at peak performance.
