If that close to 20 is closer to 10 consider it sold.
I'm actually looking for something around 5-10 that I can restore myself. I don't care too much about matching numbers, I just want something that I can fix up over a two or three year period and drive around on the weekends with my wife (no kids of course) and look
I've looked at a few coupes and I just want, need, must have, a convertible. Until I just positively can't find one for my price I will keep looking at convertibles.
Going to be hard to find a good restorable example under $10k. Better to pay the $$$ now than later. You WILL be better off in the long run.
IMHO, for $10k, forget about the chrome bumper cars (71-72, maybe 73). The only chance you have is 74 or 75. Forget about a big block 74 in good condition for $10k.
Now hold on guys. Give scottw a chance. I think it's good that he knows what he wants and is sticking with it. I did the same thing 2 years ago. Took me 2 years to find my Vette, but I got what I wanted. My priorities were (1) that it was a Vette, (2) that it was a convertible, (3) that it had rubber bumpers (I like the bumperless look), and (4) that it was cheap as I could get.
Found my numbers matching 75 for just under 9K. But, as others have guessed, it needed some work. I have since invested in a new top, new exhaust, new suspension, new paint, and new interior. Have spent almost as much as it cost me originally. But, I took my time (2 yrs) to do the work and have enjoyed driving around in the car when it didn't look good, because any Vette is better than NO Vette.
Keep looking Scott. One bit of advice. Look in the local paper. You might find a Vette that somebody is selling that they don't know what it is worth.
That's how I got mine. I bought mine from a Funeral Parlor.
If you are patient, something will show up. I just picked up my 68 ragtop for $8,000.00. Red, decent paint with only one mark (right rear fender, a sratch about the size of a cigarette butt), new top, muncie 4 speed, interior is decent too. Little rip in the drivers seat. Needs a stereo and better sounding exaust, other than that, she's ready for spring! Gotta get out the snowmobiles here shortly.
I'll sell you mine but its going to cost you 100 x $10,000.
Just keep looking, pick up a Corvette Trader that is where I found mine but I paid a little more that $10,000 for it...but not much more $12,500.
Good luck with your search
John
I'm with the others .... spend another $5,000 and get into a pretty decent car. Anything under $10,000 will probably cost you another $5-10,000 to get you the car that you can buy right now if you are willing to spend a little more.
Good luck on your search ... and I agree a ragtop is the best way to go.
Thanks for all the advise. I know I should probably pay the extra money to get a car that is in decent shape but I really want to get one that is going to cost 5K to fix it up. That is the reason I want to get one. I want to do all (as much as I can) the work to restore it and be able to drive it around and say that I made the car look THAT good.
I may regret it later but that is the plan for now. I've already found two that I could have got but I'm on my way to Kosovo for a couple weeks and who knows after that. :flag :flag
Oh don't worry there is always money to be spent on any car that you buy....I am thinking you will spend btw 12 and 15 for a good car and I am sure u will still put another 3 to 5k into her.......You will not be able to help yourself TRUST ME

Re: Wanted: 1971-75 Convertible (scottw)
Found the following:
1975 Corvette Convertible Project Car 350 / auto. AC. Most options. Engine runs great. Numbers match. 47,000 miles. Needs paint, top, interior and back bumper. Left out in weather too long. $8500. Can email pictures. Craig Pech WI 920-494-9201 pech@netnet.net
I know nothing about this car.
I do know of a '74 Roadster, silver/silver with auto I saw at a car show last week. It looked to be a great deal for the asking price of $11,900. Car was real nice, and I think it was L-82. Don't know if it is still available, but can make a call.(Miami Florida area)
Also know a '75 Roadster with 9,000 orig. miles. White/Black in the Miami, Florida area but he wants about $21k.
For a nice driver, $10k is a bit low, I looked for over a year and the only 73 conv that was priced at $11k and could have bought it for $9k was a great looker but was put together from multiple cars and was missing a lot of little things (the small parts really add up fast). I looked at the car for over 6 hours and didn't make an offer.
