Pistons - forged or cast ??
These pistons are in my old engine (1979 L48). Obviously they're not original, how can I tell if they're cast or forged ?
The engine didn't burn oil and ran fine. I think I'm going to leave the bottom end as it is and only clean and reassemble for storage...

Typically forged pistons will have the valve pockets machined in unlike those you've shown which are cast.....if you can see the bottoms you'll also notice that they have some fairly sharp casting ridges in them as well. Forged pistons will have a smooth surface underneath since they are formed in a forging die instead of being poured into a mold.
