Default Heat Riser Gasket Replacement

So the gasket between the heat riser and the exhaust manifold is shot on the passenger side, pieces are sticking out and exhaust is leaking out.

I was able to remove the bolts from the studs ok. But I figured I might be able to just back out the studs and slide the heat riser out and put in the new gasket. The studs do not seem to want to budge though. Should I be able to do it this way?

Now I'm thinking I'll have to drop the Exhaust pipe to gain access, does this sound like the correct approach?

That was the ticket, Thanks!

Went ahead and cut the baffel out of the heat riser, leaving the pin, since it was not moving to well as a little preventative maintaince.
