I am in the process of replacing my heater core and preparing the interior for Fatmat / carpets. So far I have successfully removed the center gauge cluster, parking brake surround (console) and the console shifter plate. What is now giving me fits is trying to figure out how to remove the console without getting too involved with the vent cables.
Is there a way to disconnect those cables, without dealing with the retaining washers, so I can completely remove my center console.
Please tell me there is, I am already beginning to think that I bit off more than I can chew so I could really use some good news.
I don't think there is any way around removing the heater control cables....but it isn't that big of a deal. You just need to get some retainer clips to replace the ones you remove, because they will likely be broken or damaged when you do. The easiest way is to put a pair of needlenose pliers on the outside of them and squeeze till they break in half -- then the cable end comes off easy! Also, don't forget the two flanged nuts on the underside of the lower gage console mount (or did you say you already had the gages out?).
The car's a 1969; I am removing most of the interior pieces in preparation of the installation of new carpet. While I am at it I want to replace the heater core.

Are you talking about disconnecting the cables under the console or disconnecting at the vents and pulling the cables out with the console?
I can hardly see the clips at the console end, let alone try to remove them with needle nose pliers. Once they're removed I can only imagine the nightmare of trying to reinstall them.
With the rest of the interior out, it is about an even choice. You can twist around the heater control head to get access to the clips so you can remove them. I've not tried the other way, but I guess you could try it.
