I'm planning on dropping in a 383 with an AirGap manifold. Searching the forum I can't get a straight answer if the stock 75 hood will have the clearance. Some say yes, some say no. Some say get a drop base.
Just a thought, does the LT-1 hood provide anymore clearance than the stock 75?
If I can't get clearance with my stock hood, is a BB hood the only way to go? No big2bird, I'm not going to cut a hole in my hood or any other smartass idea you can come up with.

The 383 doesn't make any difference;the RPM airgap does....my 74 has the stock hood, rpm air gap and 2" drop base K&N on holley 750 vac sec....it just fits after i took off the wingnut and used a flat nut instead and trimmed the carb- aircleaner bolt right down...john

Well I put the 383 info in there incase anyone was going to try to recommend using a performer RPM or something that would be no difference in height, but in this case wouldn't provide the flow I need. Its good to hear though you got it to fit.

No, last I heard to put in a new motor, you had to take the old one out. There is the original hood.
I'm really trying to keep this as stock looking as possible, and would like to stay away from the L-88 hood. Of course the LT-1 hood isn't stock, but I like the look better than the bulge of hte L-88.
The LT-1 hood has less clearance & used a 2" dropbase.
The 76-79 med. rise hood allows the Victor Jr, RPM & others on SB w/ aftermarket (about 1 1/4") dropbase filter (about 3") & Holley.
So you can get it under a med. rise 73-75 hood if you are serious about it.

According to the techs at Ecklers(I called last week), the L88 hood only gives about 1/4" more clearance than the LT1 style. So despite the looks I guess it's not really that much taller. The looks sure are decieving though. Can anyone confirm?

I know with my stock 72 hood and the performer EPS intake(not the rpm air gap, the RPM air gap is in my avatar photo) I had to use a 1 1/4" drop base cut for the choke housing, a 14" by 2" tall filter and a the edelbrock signature flat top ac lid. Using all this I had 1/4" clearance left. The first photo is the Edelborck Performer EPS intake with drop base, the second id the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake. As you can see their is quite a height difference.
I've fit a Performer RPM with a Q-Jet and a Demon, and a Victor Jr. with a Demon under the stock 78 hood (which I believe is the same as the 75 hood) using a Summit drop base 14x3 air cleaner with a breather lid.

Hmm... we fit a performer EPS with a Holley no problem under the stock hood with the stock air filter assembly.

This is an airgap though, as King Lear's photo shows, is much taller than the Performer. I have no doubt the Performer will fit as we have done without a dropbase. The question is can I fit an airgap with the stock Q-jet under a 75 hood?
I ran Performer AirGap in my 72 with a stock hood. Less clearance than a 75.
I thought that as well, I think whatever year they got rid of the wiper door opening the hood got an 1" or so taller. My father in laws 80 has at least 1 to 2 inches more then my 72.
Excellent, thats what I want to hear. Did you use a drop base? What kind of carb are you using?
If it can fit under a 75, it will fit under a 74 -- same hood.
I would get it from Jegs, they have a 12 month return policy, I would get the performer RPM air gap first and try it, then if that doesn't work then I would try the regular performer air gap. I think you have more clearance with your 75 then I do with the 72.
Yes, the med rise 73- hood has more clearance than the previous low rise hoods. The Performer 2101 is about 1/4 inch taller than stock.
The Performer Air-Gap is about 1/4 inch taller than 2101 & should fit.
