I was fiddling around under the dash in my 68 327/350 and when I closed the door, the courtesy lights won't go out now! The headlamp switch is not locked in the "on" position so I can't figure out what went wrong. What causes the lights to turn off once the switch is depressed? Could the switches be bad or have the wires slipped on one of the switches somehow? Any advice on where to look would be appreciated.
Is there timer on the 68? My 82 has timer. If it does the timer may be bad. If not you have a short to ground or a wire to wire problem somewhere that is completing the circuit. Check for a pinched wire or a bad door switch at or near the switch loaction.

No timer on the '68 for sure. You've got a pinched wire somewhere or a bad rheostat in the headlight switch.
Thanks. I'll add the suggestions to the trouble-shooting list. It may also be that the bulb socket on one of them has grounded to the courtesy light bracket so I'll check that, too.
Not trying to jack your post buy my 82 of course has a timmer that I don't think has anything to do with the door switch.Anyway,I seem to have an out side light that is under ther rear of that car up under the spare tire carrier. What up with that??
The most likely problem with your '68 is that one or more of your underdash light sockets is not tight in its mounting bracket. When that happens, the light bulb will ground to the bracket and illuminate all of your interior lights.
I have had this happen a couple of times on my '69, once on my sister's '69, and twice on my '68 Impala.

That is the spare tire light. Comes on with the light switch over ride.

That is a courtesy light that GM installs for cops looking for contraband. :rofl Im just messing with ya man Hope all well Copter.
I didn't have time to check it out last night, but I bet the bulb is grounding to the bracket. I fabricated both brackets over the winter and the hole in them is a little oversized so the bulbs move around a bit. Hopefully, that's all it is.

This happens to me with my '68 every so often when I'm fiddlin' under the dash. Adjust the socket and see if this works.
