Default 2004R install- Need Help -Electrical question

1980 L48 (was 350 auto) now 2004R auto

Can anyone give me some help in locating the brakelight wire and where it is runs from the engine compartment to the back.

The 2004R install instructions say I need to splice into this wire and I am trying to figure out where is the best place to do it at- but I cannot figure out which one it is?

I'm not familar with an 80 but on my 79 the break light switch is located underneath the dash and on the bracket that holds the brake petal. The switch has a plunger that makes contact with the brake petal arm. Pressing down the petal allows the plunger to extend.

Any idea where the wire goes once it is out of the switch -Routing??

Not really. I installed a BTO 2004R on my 79 and had only to worry about the TC lockup. So all I did was splice on the "out" lead of the brake wire at the break switch. This spliced wire then runs to a relay that subsequently runs to the tranny. What happens is that when the brakes are pressed, the spliced wire is only energizing a relay that then stops power going to the TC. If the brakes are not pressed, the relay supplies voltage to the TC allowing it to lockup.

OK, what is happening is in my '72 here and most GMs of the era....the orange wire on that switch is fused forlights, and allways hot....the white wire gets activated to rear brake lights.....12 volts, problem is, that is just exactly the OPPOSITE of what you need, SO, I put a relay in there to OPEN some contacts feeding 12 to the tranny input....no other way to do it easy....I could use a power transistor good for an amp or so, but to explain that on the forum is nearly impossible...just use a radio shack 12 volt coil relay.....

I don't disagree with you. In my setup, the voltage from the break petal being pressed STOPS the relay from supplying voltage to the tranny. The relay has a seperate 12v+ circuit that is deactivated when the lead from the brake switch is energized.

See this diagram from BTO:

What color was the wire that you spliced into?

It should be white....check with your lightbulb or voltmeter....that activates the relay coil, opening a contact set removing 12 volts from the tranny TCC circuit....the other side of the TCC is grounded through either a 4th gear switch OR the FI computer, thereby locking the converter....

1980's came with lockup converter. If Bubba hasn't worked on your car,all necessary wiring should be there.

I am going from a TH350 auto with lock up to a 2004R with lock up.

Are you saying that I can use the same wire thats already there -clip the old connector off and attach the new connector and I am done with the wiring?

BTO never told me this??

Exactly, if your car came with TCC then the new one should work, maybe the pin out is different, I would have to look, but its almost a plug and play

I talked with BTO and they said it could work. They are never sure how the original TC is wired so they always error on the safe side and suggest the wiring kit (moo money I guess).

BTO said to change out the pin connector, get the car into 4th and see if the TC will unlock with touching the brake. Should see about a 300 rpm jump if it does unlock. If not then the TC is not locking up!!.

Thanks-
