76 amp gauge wont work

My amp gauge does not work, it stays in the middle like a half of a tank of fuel. It is charging, I have had it checked. My question is, does anyone know how to check the gauge without taking the gauge out of the car?

you pretty much have to take the gauge out or at least pull the center console to get to it. With it out use a GOOD VOM to Ohm out the meter and then go from there

Really easy. Turn the ignition key to the "on" position but don't start the car. Turn on your headlights w/ brights on, radio and heater blower on hi-speed. If the ammeter reads about 20 amps discharge, the meter is working. If it doesn't, it is kaput! If it is not working, you can remove it and disassemble from its housing and look to see if either of the coil feed wires is broken. If so, put a jumper patch on it...it will probably work just fine.
