Is there a gasket between the cover and the main part on the diff housing?

Yes and while putting mine back together we droped the whole thing it hit pretty hard put it on anyway and now guess what I got a leak but yes there is a gasket and it can look like its on correct but the holes miss lining up keep spinning it it will cover the holes perfect.Dont forget the additive and top off with GM lube add grease on a level ground. not when its up in the air.

There is a gasket there. The ones you get at local stores, liek NAPA are not as thick as the GM gasket that I use. I use Ultra black on the gasket as well.
You'll find the snap rings are an odd size and I found 3 different thickness rings from various suppliers, as much as a .010 difference in them.
Check that housing that was dropped-cast iron is strong but it also breaks under impact.

It wasn't droped. But I am having trouble getting the joint on to the input shaft of the rear end. It seems to be too big but the half shaft ones fit fine.

There were 2 size pinion yokes used, you should have the larger one on yours if it's the original one. 3.625" If you have 3.250 you have an early pinion yoke on it.
If you're using Spicers then be sure they are compressed.

I'm using brute force ones. They have lifetime lube. I guess I'm not sure if this one is a different size than my old one.

There is a problem getting gaskets around here. The chev dealer and all of the auto parts stores told me 5 days to get one. The mechanic at chev told me just to use grey rtv, he said that is what they have been doing. Hopefully it works out.

Autozone gasket stuck to the cover with a smear of RTV. No RTV on the case side.

I got everything back together. It turns out that one of the bearings in the u-joint cap was laying flat. After reading around, 80w-90 gl-5 gear oil and limited slip additive is the way to go. Is this right?

That is what we did with my 80 rear end redo. It doesn't leak. I think we used black RTV but you can use the color of your choice with the same results I am sure.

You can use what you have I just prefer the Lucas 85-140. 60 ounces total fluid is what I fill them to. 52 oil, 8 addiitve.

I use the gaskets, you can use RTV if you want. NAPA cover gasket #P-27938

Well, it moves under its own power. But when I get moving about 5 mph there is a clunk sound coming from the back. I figured it was a u=joint byt I can't seem to trace it back to anything. Do you guys have any sugjestions?
