Anyone gone through rebuilding a Muncie 4 speed? In my 71, I have a growl/whine in first and some leaks so I'm considering a rebuild kit I've seen in the catalogs. The kit includes brgs, needle brgs, syncs, etc. Any tricks/traps to understand to make the job easier...or less painfull....or sites that may outline the job.
I am just putting mine back together now. I bought the video that's available on e-BAY. It's not a professional tape, and he doesn't get all the detail I would prefer. If you search for Muncie transmission on e-BAY there will most likely be another place that sells the book, get it. That being said, the Muncie is fairly simple to rebuild. If you have any doubts about doing it yourself, inquire at your local tranny shop for labor-I was told at least $600. Just pay attention when you take it apart; keep things clean and in order; and be patient. You may want to disassemble the tranny first to determine what kit to buy. Some come with the countershaft, and others don't. If you decide you don't need a new shaft, save yourself some money. Finally, when you have everything apart, take the case to a tranny shop and have them clean it. I paid $10 and the case looks great.
It is a fairly simple rebuild. You will need a press. I would recomend new sliders and shift forks not included in the basic rebuild kit. If you need any gears you will have to get them used. There are no more new ones
Actually you can get new gears (made in Italy) for Muncies. You can get all M-20, 21, 22 gears from http://www.5speeds.com. They also sell heavier duty than stock cases and now have a nodular iron mid-plate available, both of which will help your muncie handle more power.
I rebuilt my M20 just a few months ago. You may need a press to disassemble it...I took mine to a transmission shop and they took it apart for free...I bought the rebuilt kit from them so it saved me time and they also gave me some pointers on what to look for when checking for damage. You can assemble the transmission by heating up the sleeve and gears which are normally pressed on. I made a video of the process, but I don't have a web server right now.:(
If you have a video camera then take shots of removing the tranny as well as each step of disassembly so you get the gears back together correctly. Have patience and it will not be hard.
