What are the differences between original hoods and after market replacements .. eg through Ecklers/Zip etc? In particular, are there any obvious differences in finish? and longevity / tolerance to engine heat etc.

Are there after market replacements which match the originals in every way? If so, who/what/where to obtain?


I want to get a big block / LT1 style chrome bumper (68-72) hood for additional clearance of my new motor.

After measuring the difference between my stock small block hood, and a friends LT1 hood, I found there was about 3/4" additional clearance for the air cleaner. I was expecting more, but that's what I found. The rpm airgap vortec manifold I will be using, should fit under the big block hood with a drop base air filter though..... I hope!

I'll wait till the motor arrives and see exactly how much space I need before purchasing a replacement hood, as they aren't exactly cheap if they don't fit.

I am not keen on the L88 open back style hood. If I do need slightly more height for clearance, is there an aftermarket hood modelled on the big block hood, but with some additional height ?

Alternatively, does anyone supply a hood panel (scoop) modelled on the BB/LT1 hood mould which can be custom glassed into an existing small block hood?
This would allow additional clearance with a conventional appearance?

The stock BB/LT1 hood should give you enough clearance with a SB. I had to go with an Ecklers L88 hood with my BB to use an air gap intake. I was verry pleased with the hood. It was nice and sturdy and have had no problems with heat. It bolted right up and fit great.
