The stock alternator seems to be a little tired after so many years.... it still works (at least it worked May 2006 when I last drove the car) but it's old and ugly
maybe I'll get one of those shiney 140amps alternators
1 wire or 3 wires ??? Most of those chromies offered are 1 wire models.
what do I have to modify to make it fit ? Do I need 140amps ?
you only need 140 if you got 140 worth of stuff to run off of it. A nice sexy chrome 3 wire 70 or so is all you need for stock parts. If your going to run Fancy lights, big watt stereo and electric fans, go with the 140.
But, IMHO stick with the 3 wire, better stuff. Madelectric has a real good writeup on the subject

A 1 wire is just that, 1 wire. You don't need the plug on the side. It senses the voltage/current and turns the output up or down as it needs to. If you decide to go with a 1 wire, tie the original connector back to the harness- not every auto parts store has one and if it dies in Middle-Of-Nowhere,(you name the state) it may be a little tough to get a quick replacement.
On the flip side of that, the only thing making it 1 wire is a jumper on the regulator.
And just a suggestion. Pull your alt apart, put a new set of brushes in there and some fresh bearings. Do you need 140 amps? A/C, power everything and a killer stereo amp?
You can also get a 94 amp alternator with the same cases as the 63 amp avoiding any wire or mounting complications and that will satisfy all of your accessories.
