Default govenor filter

How important is the govenor filter on my 76 L-48. I think thats what it is. Its about an inch long , about 1/4 inch in diamater with screen on the sides. I found in my trans. pan when I pulled the pan to replace the filter. Just normal, fine metal in the pan. If I need it, where does it go?

The governor filter IS important...regardless of what anyone else might say. The governor regulates a governor valve, which has very tight tolerances between valve and bore. In certain situations, the oil sent to the governor line MAY NOT BE FILTERED...it could receive oil bypassed by the regular filter system. This governor filter is in the system for just that reason. If debris or dirt gets into this valve, it WILL stick and your transmission WILL NOT shift. Get a new one and replace it.

The governor filter is important- but I've been in lots of trannys that it was left out of. I'm not where I can get you a diagram of where it is supposed to be, unfortunatly. I'm thinking that it goes UNDER the valve body and maybe the one you're looking at is the line pressure regulator screen. I'll be able to dig up the correct info for you the middle of next week if someone doesn't post it before.

thanks for your help. My book indicates that it goes under the valve body but I dont know how it got out. Any Pics would be helpful. Thanks again

If you've already got the body on, it's your call as to whether you want to leave it out [or not]. If the tranny doesn't "throw craps" of the internal filter have some unusual problem, you won't know the difference. If you get trash in the system and the governor valve locks in its bore, you will stay in whatever range you are presently running in. I don't believe that it can cause any kind of catastrophic high-speed downshift because the filter is not there.
