Default Lars or other carb gurus.

I got the 76 up and running. I adjusted the choke pull off as per Lars spec sheet. The diaphram operated as it was supposed to and I have it adjusted to specs.

The only thing that I wonder about is the choke housing adjustment.

I marked where the cover was before I rotated it. The adjusting counter clockwise of the cover allowed the butterfly to close as it is supposed to, that was fine. Its the part in Lars paper that says, "On hot air choke systems, the cover scribe mark should be aligned with the second dot clockwise of the center dot on the choke housing marks", that is different than what it was originally set at. ****I just re-read the previous sentence and actually my setup is different. On my car the cover has one dot on it and the housing has the center scribe mark and three marks on either side of the center mark. So mine is opposite of Lars example...the end results are the same?

To me the way I read it is this: my choke cover, with the one dot on it, should be lined up on the second hash mark over from the center mark on the choke housing unit? Thats how I have set mine up. If its not running right I will just put it back in the position previous to rotating the choke cover.

I adjusted it to where Lars said and will start it up tomorrow morning, its very late now. Its that its about 1/2" off from where the cover was set to where it is now. Before I adjusted the cover the dot wasn't even lined up with any of the marks, it was counterclockwise, which is more lean. So it seems it will be more rich now.

Thanks Lars and others that have helped. The carb is adjusted to specs, so it should be good to go.

Well thought I had it cold adjusted and went out this a.m.....no start. I had to hold open butterfly to finally start. A few times a lot of fuel and mist came out of carb. One time it even had a flame shoot out!!!

I adjusted the choke pull off as the sheet said....its not right obvioulsy. I have not messed with any other carb adjustment other than the regular idle, but that doesn't come into play till car is warm.

I may have to bring to shop for the cold choke adjustment...I don't want to.

The engine is warm and I can shut it off and restart over and over and its fine now.

Jeez.

There should never be a flame shooting out of the carb, no matter how screwed up the carb is. You have issues related to either valve train or ignition timing.

Also - there is no "dot" on a stock choke cover. There is a scribe line. If you have a dot, you do not have a stock cover for a hot air choke. You can send me the carb if you want me to check it and set it up for you.

The cover says Rochester on it. Right in the middle of the "Rich/Lean" is a round dot, I assumed thats the centering mark, its on the upper side of the cover. On the housing itself is a large tick mark and three smaller ones to either side. Thats how mine is set up.

In 30 years of working Q-Jets, I have never seen a Rochester hot air choke cover with a dot instead of a scribe line... The electric choke covers have a dimple/dot for alignment of the cover to the forward hold-down screw/clip assembly. But hot air chokes have scribe lines.

If this is a hot air choke and you don't have a scribe line, set the cover as follows:

With the engine cold (first thing in the morning), loosen the 3 cover attach screws. Rotate the cover a little bit in both directions and verify that rotating the cover causes the choke to open and close. Once verified, rotate the cover counter clockwise until the choke blade fully closes, but not any further. This is the correct starting position for the choke. For adjustment, keep in mind that the choke cover rotational position determines the duration of choke application - not how rich or lean the carb is upon startup. Rich/lean is actually determined by the choke pulloff adjustment. But setting the choke cover to the position where the choke is just barely fully closed will work well for almost all applications. Compare that setting to where your "dot" is located: I'll bet that the dot is probably 45 degrees clockwise from the housing alignment marks...

If this is an electric choke, the dot in the cover is aligned with the forward of the 3 cover hold-down screw/clips.

where does the throttle position (fast idle) belong before that adjustment in the morning?
