Ok, I replaced the intake manifold gasket on my 82'. I built the engine myself, but this is the first time replacing an intake gasket. The car is a 1982 as stated, with an edelbrock rpm performer manifold L-82 heads. After i replaced the gasket everything seemed to work ok, then oil started dripping. The oil isnt my concern, my concern is the over-heating of my engine. After driving the car I came to find out that my temp sensor wasnt connected or was broken and the car overheated without me knowing (time for a new sending unit i know)to the point where it died...no i didnt turn it off in time, it died. I may very well have fried the motor I know, but I am wondering what i did to cause the engine to over-heat. It didnt over-heat prior to me replacing the gasket. Thanks for your input guys.

Default intake

When you put the new intake in you may have covered the water jackets which would cause you engine to over heat.

Would be suspicious of the timing being too advanced when you retimed it. How did the car run after the gasket swap and before it overheated? Also, what made you change the intake gaskets?

Digital camera broken, so i can't take pics The reason I changed the gasket is because I blew it and oil was spilling from the rear manifold gasket. I thought about the water jackets as well, but I cant think of how I would have covered them...unless there are 4 jackets where water should be coming from. I ordered a kit for an 82 (which only had 2 cutouts) but that shouldnt make a difference should it? since the intake is not stock? Either way i have to tear it down again, just want to know what i need to fix this time.

Also i need ALL possible area's for the engine to leak oil. I already know manifold, valve covers, sensor...any more?

Thanks guys

*Edit* oh and the timing seemed to be right on, i marked all the proper spots and the thing didnt miss a beat, so im assuming the timing is ok...that could be my mistake though.

Perhaps the cooling system was not full, as in an air pocket. That or the thermostat is stuck.

Did you drain your coolant to change your gasket? It happened to me with my previous 79 and it was because the cooling system wasn't filled up properly after I changed my radiator . I had air in the system preventing normal circulation. I was reaching the red zone on my gauge after 20 minutes driving....

I didnt drain the coolant, but i did lose some. i filled it back up, i suppose there could have been a bubble in there.

oil level was full when i fired it up. some coolant spilt down into the engine when i removed the manifold the first time, so some water got mixed in, so the oil was milky. changed the oil and it seems good...but would milky oil cause the engine to overheat? (just a side note...that's not the case, just curious)

Sounds very much like you may have used/got wrong intake gaskets and blocked flow somehow....or very low on coolant after changing intake gaskets...another possibility is you may have moved gasket while setting intake back, and coolant leaked out intake bolts without you knowing it...(ie no temp gauge for reference)...is the engine seized ???

The engine isnt seized, but it had to have done some harm to it. hopfully did crack the block or anything too serious. It started back up after i let it sit for about 30 mins, but there was water shooting out everywhere under the hood, i couldnt tell where it was coming from.

Hopefully it's just the head gaskets....doubt you cracked block....(difficult analyzing at a keyboard at this end)....perhaps you can start by draining remaining fluids (oil/coolant) then pull intake noting condition/position of gaskets re water jackets...if that checks out, pull the heads and look at head gaskets...also check freeze plugs.. with heads off you can check cylinder bores/rings for damage,if any..
Good luck....
